Here’s a closer look at what makes Broadclyst a must-visit spot.

A Short History of Broadclyst

Broadclyst, historically known as Broad Clyst, boasts a fascinating history that dates back to the Domesday Book of 1086, where it was recorded as "Clist." The village played a significant role during the medieval period, evident in its stunning architecture and historical landmarks. One of the village’s most notable buildings is the Church of St. John the Baptist, a beautiful structure with origins in the 15th century, showcasing exquisite stained glass windows and intricate woodwork.

Over the centuries, Broadclyst evolved from a predominantly agricultural community to a vibrant village, while still retaining its historical charm. The National Trust's Killerton House, a grand estate nearby, provides a glimpse into the area's rich heritage, with beautiful gardens and historical exhibits.

Things to Do

Broadclyst offers a variety of activities that cater to different interests. Nature enthusiasts can explore the Killerton Estate, which features extensive parklands, woodlands, and beautiful gardens. The estate is perfect for leisurely walks, picnics, and discovering diverse wildlife.

For history buffs, a visit to the Church of St. John the Baptist is a must. The church, with its striking architecture and serene ambiance, offers a peaceful retreat and a chance to reflect on the village's past.

Hiking and cycling enthusiasts will find numerous trails that meander through the lush Devon countryside, providing breathtaking views and an opportunity to immerse themselves in nature. The Exe Valley Way and the nearby East Devon Way offer excellent routes for exploration.

Events

Broadclyst hosts a variety of events throughout the year, reflecting the village’s vibrant community spirit. Traditional village fairs and markets are a staple, where visitors can experience local crafts, produce and entertainment. The annual Broadclyst Fun Day is a highlight, featuring games, competitions, and activities for all ages.

The village also celebrates seasonal events, such as the Harvest Festival, where the community comes together to give thanks for the year's bounty. Christmas in Broadclyst is particularly magical, with festive lights, carol singing and a warm, welcoming atmosphere.

Food and Drink

For a small village, the culinary scene in Broadclyst is rather grand. Alongside two pubs which offer hearty meals made with locally sourced ingredients, showcasing the best of Devon’s produce, there’s also a restaurant offering international cuisine, plus a mobile food truck which usually visits the village once a week if you want to grab something a bit more casual.

Don’t forget to try the locally brewed ales and ciders, which perfectly complement the regional dishes.

Something Different

For a unique experience, explore the network of hidden footpaths and bridleways that crisscross the countryside. These lesser-known routes offer a sense of adventure and the chance to discover the area’s natural beauty away from the main tourist paths.
