Whats on in Honiton
Honiton is a lively market town famous for its lace and pottery and being regarded as the antiques capital of the south west. Set in the East Devon Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, and on the banks of the River Otter, Honiton is a beautiful country town with a long industrial history.
A visit to Honiton isn’t complete without a trip to the award winning Thelma Hulbert Gallery, featuring local art and national exhibitions. Throughout the year the museum hosts many events and workshops that are well worth exploring.
The countryside around Honiton is part of the East Devon Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, and boasts many local beauty spots including magnificent Iron Age Hembury Fort and Blackbury Camp, both carpeted with bluebells in late spring. Honiton is perfect for countryside pursuits, walking and getting back to a slower pace of life.
Just a few miles from the Jurassic Coast, take a day trip to Seaton, Sidmouth and Beer and admire the stunning coastal landscape, enjoy a day at the beach and of course some local fresh fish and chips or icecream.
With its rural countryside location, accommodation in Honiton has a great mix of beautiful country house hotels; farm B&B’s, country holiday parks and stunning holiday cottages. Find your perfect Honiton place to stay here.
Each year the Honiton Agricultural Show is the highlight of the events calendar, with over 127 years of history, the show has a unique atmosphere blending traditional and new where its emphasis is agriculture and its associated activities first and foremost.
Other top events include the unusual Hot Pennies Day in July where warmed pennies are scattered from pub windows, the biannual Honiton Festival in May, a feast of classical music and visual arts, and the Honiton and District Carnival in October, considered one of the finest in Devon.
An important staging post on the Exeter - London route, Honiton's scenic setting has changed little since 1724 when Daniel Defoe described the view from Honiton Hill as 'the most beautiful landscape in the world'.
This attractive town is famous worldwide for its intricate finely crafted bobbin lace traditionally used in royal items such as Queen Victoria's wedding dress. A comprehensive Honiton Lace collection can be viewed at charming Allhallows Museum which also holds lace-making demonstrations in summer.
Almost equally famous, Honiton Pottery with beautiful stylised designs is no longer made in the town, but collectable pieces can be found in the plethora of antique shops.
