Like the rest of the county, South Devon is passionate about its sport and is perfectly located for making the most of the great outdoors and enjoying some spectator sports, with everything from horse racing to football and rugby. Taking a trip to one of the fantastic venues across the region to watch sport is a great way to entertain the whole family without needing to get too involved in the sport itself. Horse racing for example, can be enjoyed by pretty much anyone of any age and there are always plenty of great food and drink options on offer throughout your time at the races to keep you fed and watered.
There are two great horseracing venues in South Devon, Exeter Racecourse and Newton Abbot Racecourse. Both hold regular races throughout the year, as well as special days which you can look out for such as Family Fun Day at Exeter Racecourse – perfect for all the family to enjoy. Both racecourses are easily accessible by car and Newton Abbot is within walking distance to the town train station.
As well as horse racing venues, South Devon is also home to three league football teams Exeter City FC, Plymouth Argyle and Torquay United. During your stay in the area, why not head to a Torquay United, Exeter City or Plymouth Argyle home game and support the local clubs. The support from the locals at a football game is like no other, the ambience in the grounds is something not to be missed.
Exeter is also home to Premiership Rugby team the Exeter Chiefs. A visit to Sandy Park will not be forgotten, the atmosphere is electric! Sandy Park is also known for being an extremely friendly and welcoming ground making it a great day out or evening even if Rugby isn’t your favourite spectator sport!
