A Brief History of Teignmouth

These riots were sparked by religious tensions between the townspeople, who were predominantly non-conformists, and a group of visiting French Huguenots. The riots resulted in significant damage to property and left a lasting scar on the town's history. 

The Victorian Era: A Seaside Resort Emerges 

The 19th century marked a turning point for Teignmouth, as it transformed into a fashionable seaside resort. The arrival of the railway in 1846 made it more accessible to tourists from cities like London, and grand hotels and promenades sprang up along the seafront. Teignmouth's golden sands and mild climate drew visitors seeking relaxation and rejuvenation. 

World War II: Teignmouth at War 

During World War II, Teignmouth played a crucial role in the defence of the United Kingdom. The town was heavily fortified, with beach defences, pillboxes, and gun emplacements. It also served as a training ground for American troops preparing for the D-Day landings in Normandy. 

Teignmouth Today: A Vibrant Seaside Community 

Today, Teignmouth continues to be a vibrant and picturesque town that balances its rich history with modern amenities.
