Dittisham Hideaway

Surrounded by luscious green countryside and sun-dappled woodland, experience tranquillity and luxury with Dittisham Hideaway

We were recently invited to have a nose around Dittisham Hideaway and peruse their wonderful range of self-catered accommodation. The site is just a short drive from the popular maritime town of Dartmouth and just over a mile from Dittisham, a quaint and picturesque village perched on the River Dart.

Although it’s not too far off the beaten track, you should expect to drive down a couple of narrow and winding roads, but isn’t that the beauty of booking a secluded getaway? And Dittisham Hideaway are just that – secluded, and incredibly peaceful due to being a bit further from the main roads. When you reach the gates of the site you’ll realise just how pretty and quiet the area is.

The first of the accommodation we visited was the shepherds’ lodges. En-route we stopped to admire the beautiful artwork by local artist Mark Bell which depicts Dittisham and the surrounding area, complete with an interpretation of all four seasons and teeny animals which your little ones will love to try and spot!

Dittisham Hideaway Lodges and ArtAfter a short meander down a hill submerged by wild flowers with one of the lodges peeking through an opening in the trees, we reached the lodges, which are the most recent addition to the site. Dittisham Hideaway own five individual and bespoke shepherd lodges which have been built to be slightly larger than the shepherd huts you might have previously stayed in. Although they’re lined up one behind the other, the flurry of bushes and flowers allow each lodge to be private, so you feel as if you’re in your own little bubble. And speaking of bubbles, all five come with a wood-fired hot tub on the patio! Inside the décor boasts the perfect balance between chic and rustic. The wooden finishes mimic the surrounding environment, but the modern amenities give you a sense of luxury whilst deep in the countryside. Not to mention the shower! You might be used to the tiny showers when glamping but the bathrooms in these lodges are surprisingly spacious and you won’t have to worry about knocking elbows whilst trying to wash your hair! The shepherd lodges sleep two adults, plus all are dog friendly so they come with a doggy bed, bowls and treats. If you’re vacating with a family their top lodge also comes with access to a kids hut which sleeps up to four children, and there’s no need to worry about them as it also contains a video-camera so you can make sure they’re not staying up too late! It’s a nice opportunity to give your little ones more independence whilst away without having to worry about what they’re up to.

Dittisham Hideaway LodgesFrom the lodges we ambled towards the American Airstream, an iconic and retro campervan that was popular in the mid-late 1900s. Dittisham Hideaway have done an excellent job of retaining its original vintage features whilst ensuring guest can have a comfortable stay with all the facilities they might need. When stepping inside the caravan I felt as if I had stepped into the TARDIS from Doctor Who as it certainly felt bigger on the inside. In comparison to the shepherd lodges, the airstream had a separate bedroom area and still a decent sized bathroom. If you’ve stayed in a caravan before you might have felt like you were stepping on each other’s feet, but not here, there’s ample space for two to cook together, dine and relax. Not to mention the large decking which overlooked the rolling hills towards and over the River Dart.

Dittisham Hideaway AirstreamThe final accommodation we were shown was the treehouses. Engulfed in trees and simply secluded, you wouldn’t have known there were other people staying on-site if you hadn’t of just walked past the other lodges. Each treehouse feels like you’re in your own private resort, complete with a large decking, wood-fired hot tub, hammock and table top games – foosball anyone? We were slightly taken back when walking into the treehouses, of course they look large from the outside, but like the Airstream, it felt so much bigger on the inside. The tall ceiling and well-appointed décor allowed the treehouse to feel warm and spacious, plus the skylight made an excellent feature. We can just imagine spending the evening with a glass of wine in hand gazing up at the stars – another benefit to being in the countryside, the lack of light pollution! The treehouses are perfect for a family, containing three bathrooms, a large kitchen with oven, sink, dishwasher and fridge, a large bed for the grownups and a three-tiered bunkbed for the younger ones in your party. Another nice feature is that the treehouses come with all the cooking utensils and condiments that you might need so there’s no need to rush to the nearest shop if you’ve forgotten the ketchup!

Dittisham Hideaway TreehousesAll of the accommodation comes with board games, books, logs and coffee making facilities – it’s the little touches like this that make your stay even more comfortable. Dittisham Hideaway have also designed a booklet detailing all the best walks around the area which you’ll find in your abode. One unique thing we haven’t seen before that Dittisham Hideaway have, are electric wheelbarrows – what a fantastic idea! Instead of having to lug your bags from your car to your temporary new home, you can pop them in the wheelbarrow and let it do all the hard work.

Being sustainable and lowering our carbon footprint has become very important in todays society. Dittisham Hideaway offer eco friendly toiletries, refillable kitchen essentials, wood-burning hot tubs so no electricity is used. They have also installed solar panels, offer electric bike hire, EV car charging points, plus their waste is sorted at collection for food and recycling. For the cooler evenings they also offer Devon wool duvets, hot water bottle for and blankets to keep the heating thermostat lower. Way to be green Dittisham Hideaway!

Have we tempted you with a getaway to Dittisham Hideaway? Well, you’re in luck as they’ve just reduced the rates to £195.00 in September! Head to their website here to find out more about the offer.
