Visit South Devon were invited to spend the morning at Cann Woods near Plymouth with Cann Woods Segway. Despite it being a little bit damp and grey on the day, Paul was in high spirits and eager to teach us how to ride a Segway! Cann Woods Segway are open come rain or shine and, as they operate mostly under the trees, you barely feel the rain – it’s always best to bring a waterproof and dress appropriately though, of course!
Cann Woods Segway have been in the Segway-ing business for over 15 years so they really know their stuff and made us all feel completely at ease. They also have another Segway course at Haldon Forest if you’re based near Exeter. Admittedly we were a little bit nervous to begin with as we had never been on a Segway before, but with the help of Paul and Mia, we were off and away in no time; the Segway quickly became an extension of ourselves and we felt comfortable and eager to set off. They Segways available to ride here are easy to use – there’s no need to worry about balancing, you simply use control the vehicle by leaning forward or backwards and distributing your weight.
We started our Safari and Skills Segway experience with some excellent 1-1 safety training to teach us how to safely ride the vehicle. Each of us were given a helmet and individually we had to learn how to move off, how to stop and how to safely navigate around some obstacles before we set off. Paul and Mia were incredibly helpful and friendly, offering some useful tips and tricks to make riding a lot easier. These Segways maxed at a speed of 12mph and whilst none of us actually reached full potential, we were certainly enthralled at the speed we were able to travel – gliding through the trees certainly does release some endorphins!
Cann Woods sits on the east side of Plymouth in the valley of the beautiful River Plym and boarders the edge of Dartmoor National Park. It covers some 230 hectares of beautiful woodland. Segwaying is a great way to take in the surrounding environment whilst gliding through the landscape. The trees here are mix, containing coniferous and broad-leaved trees, standing tall to overlook the entire stretch of woodland and across to Dartmoor. It’s the perfect place to fully immerse yourself in nature, unwind and escape the stresses of everyday life for a short while. As well as being a great experience, you’re also doing good as a percentage of your money goes back into the forest to help sustain the wildlife and to maintain the wellbeing of the forest for future generations to enjoy.
The tour we took was suitable for absolute beginners and experienced Segway users. It involves a variety of terrain including some smooth fire roads, several hills to ride up and down, plus some off-roading for added fun! We were also able to show off what we’d learned at the end on the skills course where Paul and Mia rated our performances before we stood on a podium to celebrate our victory!
If, like us, you’ve never been on a Segway we would absolutely recommend this experience to anyone! It’s the perfect way to build confidence, enjoy the thrill of zooming off into the distance, view some beautiful landscapes and make some long-lasting memories with your friends, family or loved ones.
