The Sidmouth Rotary Club Swimathon is planned to take place on Saturday 30th October 2021 at the Sidmouth Swimming Pool.
This is the 14th year of Swimathon, which is Sidmouth Rotary Club's premier charity fund-raising event.
Sponsored teams will compete to see who can complete the most lengths of the 25-metre pool within 55 minutes. Every penny raised from the Swimathon is shared between three sponsored charities - which this year are:
• Sidmouth Hospice at Home: Is a local charity, founded in 1985 and funded by the local community, caring for people with life-limiting illnesses in the Sid Valley, and their carers and families. A Specialist Palliative Nursing Team and Volunteer and Support Services Team work with each patient and their family/carers to understand their individual needs and wishes, to ensure they receive the care and support they need to have the best possible quality of life and to enable the patient to remain in their preferred place of care.
• Sid Valley Memory Café: The Memory Café was started some 10 years ago by the Rotary Clubs of Sidmouth to help the Carers and Cared-For of the Sid Valley who were dealing with memory issues and dementia. It has developed to be a charity in its own right, and now meets weekly at Twyford House, caters for up to 60 attendees and is staffed entirely by volunteers. The sessions provide stimulation and entertainment for the Cared For and support for their Carers, whilst serving refreshments in a friendly environment. More recently the Memory Café funded an Admiral Nurse for the area, working with Dementia UK and the NHS. In addition to supporting the Café, this provides much needed help for those families associated with dementia.
• The Sidmouth Surf Life Saving Club: Is an inspiring not for profit organisation, founded in 2013 and affiliated with Surf Life Saving GB, which is a national charity helping to make our beaches safer and more enjoyable. The club provides young people from the ages of 8-18 years with surf lifesaving training, activities and competitions that promote health and wellbeing. The club also gives its members training in vital first aid and lifesaving skills as well as beach and sea knowledge.
The last Swimathon had 25 teams taking part with over 180 swimmers. A proven fun event and Rotary are hopeful this year many of our community, who have been starved of raising money for Charity, will take part. Anyone or organisation wishing to enter a team, just contact. John Prescott 01395 515394 or admin@swimathon.online or visit "www.swimathon.online". The majority of teams are fun swimmers with no pressures other than to take part and enjoy the day. However, last year, thanks for the donation of a splendid trophy from the Victoria Hotel, the more competitive teams battle to win first prize! The current holders are the Golf Club Elite team.
The Sidmouth Rotary Swimathon was first held in 2007, and since then has raised over £115,000 for local worthy causes.
Please support us to make our 2021 Swimathon a successful fund-raising event for these worthy causes.
