There's going to be a rare Piano Festival in Newton Abbot from 10th to 12th of March 2023. Three illustrious pianists of international standing, Margaret Fingerhut, Noriko Ogawa and Martin Roscoe, will be presenting together two concerts to celebrate Nadsa concert's 75th birthday. All three will be making a welcome return to the society and to the town. However, they have never, ever performed at a concert anywhere together before!
Not only will audiences hear all three at each concert, but they will be able to attend an informal chat session with the artists, an Open Rehearsal (both free of charge) and a wonderful celebration dinner with musical accompaniment provided by the three musicians. All three have fascinating anecdotes and stories to tell from their wide experiences of performance and teaching.
The first concert (7:30pm, Friday10th March) will contain a wide range of pieces: all three performers have so much that they are longing to play. Debussy, Beethoven, Bartok, Dohnanyi, Suk, Arnold and Mozart. There will be solos and duets – even a Mozart piano concerto – so the listeners will be able to experience French, Austrian, German, Romanian, Czech, Hungarian and English repertoire: a veritable European tour!
The Afternoon Audience with the Artists (3pm, Saturday 11th March) will be a rare opportunity for locals to meet and chat to outstanding musicians in an informal setting. All three have a wealth of experiences to share.
Then, on that Saturday evening, the musicians will join diners at a special dinner where they will provide entertainment throughout the event - some real impromptus no doubt. Has Newton Abbot boasted such an occasion before? Those lucky enough to be there will take home wonderful memories of an enjoyable meal, good wine, good company and music.
Sunday morning at 11am will bring the chance to sit in on an Open Rehearsal where the artists will decide the programme for the afternoon. They will only be allowed 30 minutes each at the final concert, so will need to work hard together to create a well-structured and enjoyable performance. One piece may well be a composition for two pianos, and the audience could have an opportunity to choose some of the concert content.
All birthdays have to come to an end, and the final concert at 2:30pm on Sunday 12th will bring these celebrations to a close. To be present at this concert will be an unusual experience. There will be no programme. The artists will have chosen it only a few hours earlier. It will be music that has real resonance for the performers: the culmination of an extraordinary weekend.
Following the second concert, all musicians will make their separate ways; Margaret and Martin return to London, while Noriko takes an evening flight from Heathrow to Tel Aviv where she will be performing the following day.
The Piano Festival, promoted by Nadsa concerts and sponsored by Rathbone Investment Management and James and Penelope Putz, will take place at the Courtenay Centre, Newton Abbot, from 10th - 12th March 2023.
