Nestled amidst the open moorland and dramatic tors of Dartmoor National Park lies the captivating destination of Meldon Reservoir, where nature and history intertwine to offer a unique day out. As a Scheduled Monument, Meldon Reservoir boasts a rich heritage waiting to be explored. Whether you're drawn to the allure of nature, intrigued by the echoes of history or simply seek quality family time in the great outdoors, Meldon Reservoir promises an array of experiences to suit every adventurer.
Immerse yourself in the tranquility here, a picturesque waterbody formed by the damming of the River Okement. Dating back to the early 1970s, this reservoir serves as a vital water supply for Okehampton and its neighbouring areas. Popular activities such as hiking, picnicking, birdwatching and fishing await amidst the rolling hills and captivating vistas. Experience the beauty of nature at its finest from the vantage point of the reservoir's dam, keep an eye out for animals such as adders, grass snakes and herons. And, if you're an avid angler, be to sure to bring your rod and fish for natural brown trout.
From the reservoir, you'll be sure to spot Meldon Viaduct, a relic of the 19th-century London and South Western Railway. Comprising 11 magnificent arches, this towering structure stands over 50 meters high, offering panoramic views of the valley below. While the railway line has ceased operations, the viaduct endures as a testament to the region's industrial heritage. Embark on a leisurely stroll or cycle along the Granite Way, a scenic trail tracing the path of the former railway, and soak in the historic charm of Meldon Viaduct.
While there isn't direct public transport to Meldon Reservoir, you can take a train or bus to Okehampton and then either walk or cycle to the reservoir. The reservoir is also accessible by car, with parking available at designated areas near the site.
