Sense and Sensibility was a hit screenplay directed by Ang Lee and based on the Jane Austen novel. With an all-star cast, featuring Alan Rickman, Emma Thompson, Kate Winslet and Hugh Grant it managed to be nominated for seven Academy Awards with Emma Thompson scooping the Award for Best Adapted Screenplay, having written the script as well as staring in the film herself. Filming locations were based in various parts of England with a few being located in South Devon.
Efford House - Flete Estate
Used as the house to where the main family in the film relocate, Efford House is one of many cottages on the Flete Estate in Holbeton, Plymouth. Set on the banks of the River Erme, this rural collection of properties is a beautiful self catering accommodation choice when visiting South Devon.
Saltram House
Saltram House, now managed by the National Trust, was used in the filming of Sense and Sensibility as the home from where the main family must depart following the death of their step-dad. It is a Georgian mansion overlooking the River Plym and set amongst delightful gardens making it a wonderful place to explore when visiting South Devon.
Compton Castle
Located in the parish of Marldon, in the small village of Compton, Compton Castle was used as the estate of one of the characters. Similarly to Saltram House, it is now run by the National Trust, giving visitors an opportunity to discover the medieval delights of this ancient fortress.
St Mary's Church
St Mary's Church makes an appearance in the final wedding scene of Sense and Sensibility and is situated in Berry Pomeroy, not far from Totnes. Built in the 1490's this historical building is still a large part of the community at Berry Pomeroy. Nearby is Berry Pomeroy Castle, rumoured to be one of the most haunted places in England, making the Castle and St Mary's Church a great day out for film lovers and history buffs.
