Homeyards Botanical Gardens are located on a steep hillside just above the small village of Shaldon with breathtaking vistas over to idyllic town of Teignmouth, the captivating Teign Estuary and out to sea and along the rugged coastline. Built in the late 1920's and early 1930's, the beautiful gardens were devised by Maria Kempe Homeyard, widow of William Newcombe Homeyard who had invented and manufactured Liquafruta cough syrup. The terraced gardens offer splendid views of the River Teign and across to Teignmouth, with pretty Italian rockeries, a pond and rill garden, as well as a charming Castle.
The site received funding from the Heritage Lottery Fund and Viridor Credits Environment Company to help restore the Castle. This also allowed them to add other facilities, such as a toilet with disabled access. The elevated setting of these gardens is sublime and make for a wonderful place to walk and explore the grounds with plenty of intriguing parts to discover.
Homeyards Botanical Gardens are situated on a very sloping site, therefore four out of the five pedestrian entrances include steep steps, however, the pergola entrance at the east end of the gardens is more easily accessed than the others. There are also two designated parking spots for disabled visitors. The Castle throughout the year plays part in lots of local community events and can even be hired, please do be aware however that it is unmanned and does not have open access.
A relaxing location enjoyed by many, a trip to Homeyards Botanical Gardens ensures a treat for the whole family and unparalleled views of the beautiful area surrounding it. With well kempt gardens, stunning trees and a historical building to marvel at, this is the perfect place to enjoy a tranquil walk or simply to gaze at the incredible view while you bask in glorious sunshine.
