Named by The Telegraph as one of Britain’s 15 Best High Streets, Totnes has a thriving market and independent shop scene. The town has a rich heritage with lots of history to discover, including the imposing Norman motte and bailey Totnes Castle, The Guildhall, and Totnes Museum, which includes a room dedicated to Charles Babbage, the ‘father of the computer’, who was once a resident. A visit to Totnes is also a chance to savour South Devon's best food. From cream teas and homemade gelato to steak and chips with a view of the river, the town's many cafes and restaurants make full use of the bountiful harvest of fresh, local, seasonally available produce.
Located on the banks of the River Dart, Totnes is just 9 miles from Torquay.
Other distances:
Exeter = 30 miles
Plymouth = 23 miles
Dartmouth = 13 miles
The main drop off points for coaches in Totnes are the two bus stops on Coronation Road. There is an additional drop off point at The Lamb at the top of town, which allows your passengers to walk downhill through the town. FREE coach parking bays can be found at the South Hams District Council-run car park at Steamer Quay Car Park.
If you like to shop, you’ll love the treasures on offer in the independent stores lining Totnes’ thriving high street. There’s a strong emphasis on local and handmade goods, with everything from fashion to fudge ready to tempt you. On Fridays and Saturdays throughout the year, the market square buzzes with over 50 stalls selling an eclectic mix of vintage collectables, food, and crafts.
To make it a real day to remember you can arrive in Totnes by boat or steam train. The Dartmouth Steam and River Company operate boat trips to Totnes departing from Dartmouth or hop aboard a vintage train from Buckfastleigh with the South Devon Railway.
The Visit Totnes Tourist Information Centre is located in the Market Square. It is open 10am-4pm Mondays to Fridays (except Bank Holidays) from April-October and offers town maps and advice on things to do and places to visit.
