Heritage Open Days in South Devon

Heritage Open Days, the annual celebration of England's rich and diverse cultural history, returns to South Devon from 6th to 15th September 2024. This event offers a unique opportunity to explore hidden gems and historical landmarks across the region, as some of the county’s most fascinating buildings open their doors for free. It's an ideal time to delve into the captivating history of South Devon as part of this year’s Heritage Open Days. 

Here's a curated selection of must-visit events in South Devon during this year's Heritage Open Days: 

Powderham Castle, Kenton 

Immerse yourself in over 600 years of history at Powderham Castle, the ancestral home of the Earl of Devon. The castle offers a unique glimpse into aristocratic life, complete with beautiful gardens and deer park. Special events include guided tours that delve into the castle’s fascinating history.

South Devon Railway, Buckfastleigh 

Step back in time with a visit to the South Devon Railway. This heritage steam railway offers a scenic journey along the River Dart. During Heritage Open Days, visitors can enjoy behind-the-scenes tours of the locomotive works and museum, making it a perfect outing for families.

Custom House Visitor Centre, Exeter 

Located in the historic Exeter Quayside, Custom House Visitor Centre is a charming 17th-century warehouse that now houses a visitor centre. During the Heritage Open Days, explore many great events. 

8th September, 14:00 - "Tales of the Land and Songs of the Sea," a fascinating talk on Exeter’s maritime history by Jon Bell. (booking essential) 

11th September, 18:00 - historian Ian Mortimer will discuss medieval travel in the southwest, drawing from his latest book, Medieval Horizons. (pre-booking preferred) 

14th September, 11:00 – 16:00 - a stand to inform the public about Maritime Heritage in general and Britannia's role in Britain's seafaring community. This will include information about traditional crafts relating to shipbuilding, demonstrations, tools etc. (pre-booking not required) 

13th – 15th September, Custom House Visitor Centre will host a community radio project, bringing the sounds and stories of the River Exe to life. This unique event will also be streamed online, making it accessible to a wider audience. (pre-booking not required) 

Tavistock Guildhall, Tavistock

Explore one of Tavistock’s most iconic buildings, the Guildhall, which has recently been restored. Discover its unique history as one of the earliest police stations in England, complete with Victorian cells and courtroom. 

6th September, 16:30 – 17:30 - A fascinating discussion on the extraordinary discovery of one of the UK's most well-preserved Tudor ship wall paintings. Uncover the captivating story behind this historical treasure and explore its importance to Tavistock's rich history. Don't miss the opportunity to visit the new Guildhall exhibition featuring this remarkable find. (pre-booking preferred) 

7th September, 10:00 - 16:00 - Pirate Day at the Guildhall – A thrilling pirate-themed family fun day, celebrate the opening of the Tavistock Ship Exhibition at the Tavistock Guildhall and car park! Enjoy puppet shows, browse artisan traders, explore kids' trails, and take part in a variety of exciting activities for all ages. (pre-booking not required) 

12th September, 10:00 – 12:00 - A guided walk through Tavistock that explores the history of communications, beginning at the Duke of Bedford's statue near the Town Hall. The tour includes visits to turnpike roads, bridges, tollhouses, and remnants of the railway. (pre-booking not required) 

Teign Heritage Centre, Teignmouth 

Teign Heritage Centre, home to the Teignmouth & Shaldon Museum, offers a deep dive into the maritime and cultural history of this coastal town. Special exhibitions and family-friendly activities are planned for Heritage Open Days. 

7th September, 10:30 – 16:00 - "Sun, sea and shifting sands" - an exhibition of paintings and prints from the Museum Collection about the Teign Estuary. (pre-booking not required) 

Kirkham House, Paignton 

This medieval stone house is one of the best-preserved examples of its kind in Devon. Visitors can enjoy free entry and guided tours that highlight its historical significance and architectural features on 7th, 8th, 14th  and 15th  September from 11:00 – 16:00. (pre-booking not required) 

Poltimore House, Exeter 

On the weekend of 14th and 15th September, Poltimore House will be offering tours of this stately home and its extensive grounds. Once a grand estate, the house has a fascinating history, including its use as a hospital during World War II.

East Budleigh Heritage Centre, East Budleigh

 
The East Budleigh Heritage Centre will present a special exhibition on smuggling in the 18th and 19th centuries, held in the historic Salem Chapel. The exhibition will focus on how contraband was smuggled from France to the Devon coast, offering a thrilling glimpse into this dangerous trade.  

14th – 15th September, 14:00 – 16:00 (pre-booking not required)
