Joni Mitchell at The Beehive

In early 2023 myself (Kathryn Pepper) and longtime songwriting partner Paul Zervas decided to press pause on our recording endeavours. With over a decade of recording and touring we were feeling the need to reconnect with our early love of music, the music that had inspired our passion for song craft.. ‘Joni Mitchell’, ‘Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young’, ‘The Byrds’.. yearning for a musical  challenge we decided to embark on our next adventure.. touring the stunning catalogue of Joni Mitchell’s fine music.. complex, challenging, evocative and beautiful.

The show is called ‘This Flight Tonight, The Songs of Joni Mitchell’.. we take the audience on a journey through Joni’s first 8 albums.. ‘Songs to a Seagull’, ‘Clouds’, ‘Ladies of the Canyon’, ‘Blue’, ‘For the Roses’, ‘Court and Spark’, ‘Hissing of Summer Lawns’, ‘Hejira’. Travelling from Joni’s time performing in the coffee houses and folk clubs of the ‘60’s to her cinematic Jazz pop records that are steeped in LA imagery.

We were unsure of how the show would be received when embarking on these tours, Joni Mitchell being so personal to so many. We knew the audience would possibly be  reluctant to hear Joni’s music performed by anyone but Joni, so it’s been a real joy to see the audiences react with such warmth and enthusiasm. An often emotional experience as we present the soundtrack to many people’s lives..

Over the last 18months we’ve presented the show at Minack Theatre, Celtic Connections Glasgow, Snape Maltings Ipswich, Cathedral Quarter Belfast and many more. Last summer we performed a show in North Devon, we’d seen a Dulcimer (Joni’s acoustic lap instrument) for sale online not too far from the venue. I have amassed quite a few Dulcimer’s in my pursuit of Joni’s ‘Blue’ album sound, we headed to pick up the Dulcimer from a lovely couple who had had it since the ‘60’s. It was a wildly rainy day as we headed over the Exmoor Hills, I had a few moments where I thought the van might give up the ghost, loaded with musicians and instruments... we made it to the show, beautiful Dulcimer safely in hand, now aware that Devon has hills to match our Welsh landscape. This Autumn we return with our five piece band... this time performing at The Beehive in Honiton. Our first time at this venue, very much looking forward to bringing Joni’s music back to Devon.
