South Devon is known for its picturesque natural beauty – particularly that of its coastline. If you want to take in its spectacular scenery, what better way than by visiting one of the many towns and cities that are dotted along the coast?

The one problem with that is that there are just so many that you may have trouble deciding which ones you want to visit. But just keep reading to find out what the best choices are:

Salcombe

An idyllic town located on the Kingsbridge Estuary, Salcombe is known for its exceptional coastal views and countryside charm. At this fishing town you can choose to explore its coastal path, check out its beaches, take a dip, or even try the water sports activities that are available.

Alternatively you could simply wander through the narrow cobbled streets of the town itself while checking out it’s small shops, trying ice cream at the Salcombe Dairy, or visiting one of its restaurants to grab some fresh seafood.

Dartmouth

Famous for being peaceful and steeped in history, Dartmouth is home to a medieval castle and church, and a museum where you can learn more about the history of the town and the region. In addition to having lots of water sports on offer, this town also has quiet local coves with great views of the coast and the castle.

Torquay

Situated on a stretch of coastline known as the English Riviera, Torquay is a thriving harbour town. Seeing as it has been a famous holiday destination since the Victorian era, there’s plenty to do in this town including its sandy beaches and coastal paths.

Expect to find lots of day-excursions, boat trips and ferries providing tours that let you get to experience the unique geological landscape and varied coastal wildlife.

Plymouth

If you’d prefer a more urban break, Plymouth is a good place to start. It is a lively waterfront city and seaport that has tons of attractions, shopping, entertainment, activities and sightseeing opportunities.

Be sure to wander the quaint cobbled paths on the Barbican, learn about local sea life at the National Marine Aquarium, climb the Smeaton’s Tower lighthouse, or enjoy the crystal clear water at Wembury beach.

Brixham

Charming as it may be, Brixham is one of the largest fishing ports in Europe. It boasts a history of freshest catches, and has ample places where you can sample them while watching the boats come in.

If you have the time, learn more about Brixham’s history at its local museum, or hike the South West Coast Path to explore several other beaches.

Once you decide which towns or cities you intend to visit, be sure to find a good place to stay. There are ample options available, from hotels to bed and breakfasts, or Devon holiday parks.

Make no mistake, South Devon is truly a slice of paradise and no matter where you go you’ll be able to enjoy its rich scenic beauty. Not only that but after a few days you’ll find life here so appealing that you wish you never have to leave.
