Below we’ve pulled together just some of our favourite running routes in South Devon to ensure that you not only find a route that’s suits your current running capabilities but is also visually captivating. 

South West Coast Path 

Stretching for 630 miles along the southwest coast of England, the South West Coast Path offers some of the most awe-inspiring running routes in South Devon. You'll run along rugged cliffs, pass through quaint fishing villages and bustling towns, and enjoy panoramic views of the English Channel. Be prepared for challenging elevation changes, but the views are well worth the effort. 

Dartmoor National Park 

For those who crave a wilder running experience, Dartmoor National Park is a must-visit destination. With its granite tors, open moorland, and ancient woodlands, Dartmoor provides a dramatic and exhilarating backdrop for your runs. Try the Haytor Circular route for a challenging 10-mile run that takes you to the iconic Haytor Rock and offers stunning vistas of the park's unique landscapes. It’s moderately challenging but rewards you with captivating landscapes! 

Salcombe and Bolt Head 

Salcombe, a picturesque coastal town, boasts several great running routes. One of the most popular takes you from Salcombe to Bolt Head. This route provides a mix of coastal and inland running, passing through fields and along the clifftops. The views of the Kingsbridge - Salcombe Estuary and the English Channel are simply breath taking, making this route a runner's dream. 

The River Dart Trail 

If you prefer running alongside water, the River Dart Trail is the perfect choice. Start in the historic town of Totnes and follow the River Dart as it meanders through woodlands, pastures, and charming riverside villages. The trail offers a peaceful and serene atmosphere, making it ideal for long, contemplative runs. You can choose your distance, as the trail can be as short as a few miles or extend to a marathon-distance run. 

Teignmouth to Dawlish 

Start your run in the charming seaside town of Teignmouth and follow the South West Coast Path as it winds along the coastline towards Dawlish. This route offers breath-taking sea views, a scenic railway line that runs right along the coast, and the iconic red sandstone cliffs. It's a relatively flat route, making it accessible to runners of all levels. 

Haldon Forest Park  

If you're looking for a peaceful run through lush woodlands, Haldon Forest Park is an excellent choice. Located just outside Exeter, this park offers a network of well-maintained trails suitable for runners of all abilities. You can choose from various loops and routes, with the Haldon Ridge run being a favourite, offering panoramic views of the Exe Estuary and beyond. It’s also a great place to run during the warm spring and summer months as the large, towering trees offer plenty of cooling shade.  

Start Point Lighthouse Loop 

For a shorter yet incredibly scenic coastal run, consider the Start Point Lighthouse Loop near Start Bay. This route begins at the lighthouse and takes you along the rugged coastline, offering awe-inspiring views of the sea and the rugged cliffs. After your run, why not explore the nearby beaches, coves, and the quaint village of Beesands and Hallsands, making it a rewarding and picturesque run.  

Exe Estuary Trail 

The Exe Estuary Trail is a flat and family-friendly route that takes you along the banks of the River Exe. Starting in Dawlish Warren, the trail goes through Exeter Quayside and ends in Exmouth, covering a total distance of 26 miles. This flat and scenic route offer birdwatching opportunities, beautiful estuary views, and charming villages to explore along the way. You can customise your run by choosing the length that suits your fitness level. We’d recommend staring at Starcross and finishing your run at Turf Locks or Double Locks for a post-run reward, whether it’s a warming cup of coffee, a refreshing pint or a light lunch to refuel yourself!
