If, like us, since the onset of the pandemic you’ve been working from home, you might be looking for a change of atmosphere and environment. Working from home can be great, you’re able to work more flexibly with an endless supply of food and coffee, however, there are a few downsides. It can get quite lonely sometimes and not to mention all the distractions that are present in your home! With the winter season approaching and the rising energy prices, why not take a break from your home office and try out a local work club.
We were recently invited to try The Bucket and Spade’s Work Club in Shaldon. The Bucket and Spade is a café, restaurant and bar located at Coast View Holiday Park. For just £6 you’re allowed to stay the entire day with an unlimited supply of teas and coffees – they even have vegan milk for those who prefer to stick to plant-based drinks. Their coffee is provided by Voyager Coffee, a local roaster based near Dartmoor, who source rich and delicious coffee beans from sustainable farms around the world.
The Bucket and Spade offer free WIFI, free parking, and unbeatable views of the coastline – on a clear, sunny day, you can see the wonderful Jurassic Coastline stretching from East Devon to Dorset. As the café was opened recently in 2021, the interior is very contemporary with lots of wooden and industrial flourishes; and with the morning sun beaming through the windows, it was warm and cosy. The furniture here is very comfortable which is something we may take for granted when thinking of a place to work. So far, it ticks all the boxes!
When working from home, it’s hard to differentiate between work and pleasure, with many of us working all day with no fixed boundaries. However, working in a change of environment allows you to focus more when you’re working before returning home to relax. For a fresh November day, and not during the peak season, the cafe had a constant and steady stream of people enjoying a hot drink, some tasty grub or using the gym and spa facilities below. It’s quite a friendly atmosphere and you certainly get your fix of socialising for the day, compared to when you’re working at home alone.
By lunchtime, we began to feel a bit peckish and were lucky enough to be treated to a tasty lunch at the café restaurant. The menu here is rather extensive, with a wide range of food items to choose from and sourced as locally as possible. Depending on how hungry you are, they have some tasty smaller dishes such as sandwiches and some larger meals on offer such as burgers, curries, salads and pasta dishes. We were pleasantly surprised by the amount of plant-based and gluten-free options there were too. Sydney, our Marketing Manager went for the Bucket Beef Burger which consisted of a Westcountry patty with smoked cheddar, crispy bacon, mustard mayo and fire chutney served in a pretzel bun with skin on fries. Yum! Our Marketing and Content Assistant, Tia, went for one of the vegan options – wild mushroom linguine with tomato and tarragon. Both dishes are highly recommended, they were jam packed with flavour and the serving size was certainly generous!
Whether you’re looking for a new place to sit and work, or simply looking to visit somewhere with a great menu, views and atmosphere, The Bucket and Spade comes highly commended by us!
