Guest Blog Post - Hassle Free Hiking
The coast path is all about enjoying nature, but in case you need to “answer nature’s call” whilst walking, we hope you find the following useful.
In general public toilets are to be found in or near the more popular coastal resorts or beaches, and less so in remote sections. So along the South Devon section of the path, you’ll be well-served in or near Plymouth, Salcombe, Dartmouth and Brixham - and between Bigbury and Hope Cove. You’ll be less well-served between Noss Mayo and Mothecombe, East Portlemouth and Torcross, and between Kingswear and St.Mary’s Bay.
Below is a list of public toilets located near the path – starting at Mount Batten in Plymouth and heading east. Most but not all are free to use. If you’re using a walker’s map (1:25000 scale) these are marked PC – standing for public convenience. Some have rather wonderful beach-side locations – such as Strete Gate over-looking Slapton Sands, those next to South Milton Sands and those behind Mill Bay at East Portlemouth.
It makes sense to use the facilities at any cafés, pubs or restaurants you stop at en-route – good examples of such places are Oceans Restaurant at Bolberry Down or Gara Rock Hotel beyond Portlemouth Down.
If you’re caught short in a remote area well away from any facilities, there’s always the option of finding a secluded spot to relieve yourself. But please make sure you’re off the trail and away from any water courses – burying any waste where required and disposing of any wipes responsibly. The aim is to leave little or no trace!
