Dawlish is a traditional seaside resort. The famous brook, Dawlish Water, runs through the heart of the town, which is home to a wide variety of water fowl including the famous Black Swans. The Lawn - a centrally located public park, lies between the individual shops and cafes and has an outdoor bowling green, bandstand, adventure golf and water fowl compound, ideal for seeing the ducklings and famous black swans which live on the brook. Walk up the river, admiring the many weirs and relax in the peaceful Manor House Gardens. There is also a children’s play area in the park opposite.
Dawlish is famous for its scenic railway route along the sea front, part of the Riviera Line, as seen on the TV programme ‘Coast’. It runs along the coast under the distinctive red cliffs, a few yards from the shoreline and cutting through a series of dramatic tunnels and coves.
For traditional seaside fare, Dawlish offers hot pasties, fish and chips, delicious ice creams and Devon cream teas. There are a variety of cafés and eating places to suit all tastes, also local bakeries and confectionary stores, so you will not be short of ways to treat yourself while exploring Dawlish.
In search of information about the area? Why not call into the Tourist Information Centre and pick up attraction leaflets, town maps and rail and bus timetables to help you enjoy your holiday.
Visit Dawlish Museum, home of the D-Day bag pipes, along with many other local artefacts (Seasonal opening). The Shaftesbury Theatre in Brunswick Place is home to the local drama group and as well as shows, offers monthly cinema screenings of current films.
Take the Brunel Trail and follow the series of history boards; start at Coryton Cove and walk along the coast path finishing at the beach resort of Dawlish Warren.
Coryton is a sheltered cove, not accessible by car, great for children where they can enjoy rock pooling and you can enjoy the café.
Dawlish Warren is a perfect location for a day at the sea with a Blue Flag award winning beach, distinctive sand dunes and an internationally recognised nature reserve. There are also shops, eating outlets, pubs and an amusement park alongside a Go Kart track. It also boasts a beautiful 500 acre nature reserve providing the habitat for plenty of wildlife and offering breath-taking views of the Exe Estuary. The Exe Cycle Trail starts in Dawlish and runs all around the Exe Estuary.
