Guest Blog Post - Sidmouth & East Devon Walking Festival
Sat 22nd - Fri 28th September 2018
Come and join us for a week of fabulous walking in glorious East Devon.
The festival walks are planned to showcase the variety that the coast and countryside have to offer for both hardy walkers and those wanting a more leisurely ramble. And what’s more – all walks are FREE, just let us know you’re coming by booking with Sidmouth TIC 01395 516441.
You’re spoilt for choice with over 20 walks – chose from 3 to 9 miles, interest walks, coast or countryside. Whichever you choose you’ll find a warm welcome with friendly and knowledgeable guides. The regency resort of Sidmouth is the hub of our Walking Festival, now in its 5th year. Sitting in the valley of the River Sid the resort has a fascinating history which we explore on several special interest walks. These walks are led by local historians and provide an insight into the past with a gentle walk.
This year we also have walks from Ottery St Mary exploring its links with the poet and philosopher Samuel Taylor Coleridge. And if history is your thing Budleigh Salterton is celebrating the 400th Anniversary of Sir Walter Raleigh, our walk here takes us around the area of his childhood. We go even further back in time with a walk at Woodbury Castle, an iron-age hill fort. The Jurassic Coast is a magnet for many walkers on the South West Coast Path. The East Devon section between Exmouth and Lyme Regis has dramatic cliffs with a lot of ups and downs! Our coastal walks make the most of those spectacular views but without so many ups and downs.
East Devon has a wide variety of landscapes and the 40 mile East Devon Way is an inland route from Exmouth to Lyme Regis that really showcases East Devon countryside. We walk the route over 5 days with a coach each day from Sidmouth to drop us off and pick us up each day. This is a very popular walk and once again our coach is fully booked. If you’d like to do this walk make a note to get booking early for September 2019!
The full list of walks can be found on our Facebook page: Sidmouth Walking Festival and at www.visitsidmouth.co.uk/events.
Walks must be booked in advance with Sidmouth TIC: 01395 516441
