MTV Presents: Ocean City Sounds taking over Plymouth Hoe this summer.
Plymouth Hoe, a luscious green-lawned expanse with breath-taking views over the sea, is steeped in history; legend says that Sir Francis Drake played bowls here as he awaited the arrival of the Spanish Armada. Nowadays, it’s home to the distinctive red-and-white striped Smeaton’s Tower, a former lighthouse, and is a popular spot for picnickers, tourists and families. But on 26 and 27 July this year, this beautiful spot will be transformed into an incredible open-air concert venue, entertaining thousands of people at MTV Presents: Ocean City Sounds.Day 1 (Thursday 26 July) will see headliners Bastille treat the crowds to a 90-minute set. Expect a huge singalong as the indie titans are famous for songs including ‘Pompeii’, ‘Flaws’ and ‘Good Grief’.
Singer-songwriter Ella Eyre and rapper Professor Green will also be performing, with Club MTV favourites R3WIRE & VARSKI getting the party started on the night. Ella Eyre sprung onto the scene in 2012 and is now the deserving owner of two MOBO Awards, a Brit Award and a Top 10 album, while Professor Green has three albums under his belt and has collaborated with everyone from Lily Allen and Emeli Sandé to The Streets. Day One will be part of the ‘MTV Presents’ series – which will also include Gibraltar Calling and Varna Beach in Bulgaria. A highlights show ‘MTV Presents: Ocean City Sounds’ will be broadcast on MTV in August.
Day 2 (Friday 27 July) will see concert-goers being taken on a nostalgia trip to the heady days of the 90s. In an exclusive South West performance, legendary DJ Pete Tong and the Heritage Orchestra, conducted by Jules Buckley, will perform their full Ibiza Classics show. The critically-acclaimed show will be an audio visual spectacle, as classic dance tracks are performed by a 65-piece orchestra and guest vocalists. It’s sold-out arenas across the country and performed at the BBC Ibiza Proms, but Ocean City Sounds is the only opportunity to see this incredible show in the South West, making it an unmissable opportunity. Tom Findlay (one half of cult DJ duo Groove Armada) and BBC Radio 1 presenter Danny Howard will also be performing – so who needs Ibiza when you’ve got a beautiful waterfront and amazing live music right here in South Devon?!If you’re travelling from further afield, there are loads of great places to stay just moments from the Hoe, so you can choose between luxury hotels, family-run guest houses or self-catered apartments. Why not make a weekend out of it and stay a little longer to explore Plymouth, Britain’s Ocean City?
