Guest Blog Post - Every Avenue Weddings Magazines - Penny Davis

You all have some idea of where you would like to get married.  Here we take a look at more traditional venues & then look at some more unusual wedding venues that are available across South Devon.

Castles

Many dream of being a princess bride, marrying their very own prince charming. With that comes the castle! Seeped with grandeur and opulence, the castle is the perfect fairy tale pick. You can marry within the walls of the castle itself or within the exquisite grounds on a summer’s day, either enjoying your evening reception in the castle itself, or tailoring your venue with a marquee, erected in the grounds. Your guests are sure to be in awe of this fine venue. The castle offers everything you need to live out your dream day. You don’t have to hire the whole castle exclusively and there will be a dedicated wedding planner on hand to guide you through everything & help you keep check of your budget & source service providers on your behalf.

Manor House

Your very own country manor house for the day! What is great about choosing a private house, is that if you choose to hire it out exclusively, then you, your family & friends have your wedding, reception & accommodation all under one roof so there is no ferrying from one venue to the other on the day or night.

Private houses, such as the one pictured (Buckland Tout Saints in South Devon) have on hand a dedicated wedding planner, to help you create your dream wedding. There are some absolutely fabulous private houses dotted around South Devon. This type of venue is perfect for all season weddings. Bask in the sunshine during the summer months, sipping champagne in the gardens or cosy up around a roaring fire during those winter months, either way, you will be set for a fabulous day.

Hotel

Choosing a hotel for the venue of your special day, is a versatile choice indeed. Hotels can cater for the tightest of budgets, right up to the full, lavish works. As with the castle and country house, they have their own dedicated wedding planner. Inside they can have Great Halls with oak panelling and ornate carvings adorning the walls and high ceilings. It can also home beautiful roaring open fires. Absolutely picturesque for a winter wedding. For the summer, they usually have a pretty gazebo outside which could be divinely followed up by a scrumptious cream tea in the gardens, after the ceremony. There really are just so many options when you decide to marry in a hotel. There are many hotels to choose from in South Devon, I’d suggest checking out the hotels testimonials, which should be on their website or ask in the Facebook wedding groups, who, if anyone has married at the particular hotel you are interested in. Make sure you go along and take a look around.  You can’t always go by what others have experienced. You need to see for yourself if this is the right venue for you.

Unusual Wedding Venues

South Devon offers the bride & groom-to-be the chance to fulfil their wedding day dreams, with an array of gorgeous venues in breathe taking scenery. It also offers those of you who’d like the chance to divulge in something that little bit different, with unusual wedding venues such as a wedding in a cave, botanical gardens, a cliff top railway, the zoo, aquarium or walking amongst penguins. These are all options available to you in the beautifully unique South Devon. You can incorporate unusual wedding services into your unusual wedding day too, such as having a bridal bouquet made from toys, crystals, paper, feathers, brooches or anything related to your wedding day theme. You can choose from the unusual wedding favours on offer across the region or hire some unusual wedding entertainment to surprise your guests.

Planning

With all the venues, I’d suggest that before visiting them, write down a list of questions that you would like to ask them. Such as do they charge a corkage fee, how long do you have any rooms for that you are hiring on the day? Are there any restrictions that may affect your booking? Do they have a list of recommended service providers that you could have, to help you organise your wedding day. If you are planning on having a dove release or incorporating animals into your wedding in any way, make sure you check with your venue before you book that you will be permitted animals there. It’s happened time and again when a couple have found the perfect venue, booked it, only to be told at a later date that they would not be allowed that dove release they’d dreamed of because of the hotels policies on animals.

How many power points are available may be something else to ask. Imagine booking that chocolate fountain, candy floss and popcorn making machine and finding out on the day that there are limited power points available. It’s unusual, but some venues do have limited power points & if your venue does not have a wedding planner on hand to assist you, then you need to consider the smallest of detail to ensure your day runs smoothly.

If you are having difficulty finding the perfect venue, you can contact your local council, who have a listing of registered licensed venues in your chosen area, or you could opt for using a wedding planners services. You do not have to hire a wedding planner to organise your whole day. You can take advantage of the services that they offer & use one just to source a venue or particular service provider that you require. Searching for a venue can be extremely time consuming, so this option may be beneficial to many of you who have little time to plan your big day. There are a number of extremely reputable wedding planners dotted around South Devon, who would be more than happy to help with your enquiries.

There are also many online wedding planning apps that can help you to budget for your day or to give ideas on themes & colour schemes & there are online wedding directories that will list reputable service providers, planners & venues in your area.

Not forgetting of course the array of fabulous local online bridal magazines that are brimming with ideas, links, tips & information that you could incorporate into your own wedding. To really get a feel for what’s on offer, you can take full advantage of all the fabulous wedding fairs that take place locally, around the year. It’s here where you get to meet the service providers face to face, get to sample goods, get ideas that you may never have thought of, get an idea of costing and usually get to watch a gorgeous bridal catwalk where you may just find ‘the dress’.

Wherever you decide to marry in South Devon, in which ever season, you can be sure that you will have a spectacular day.
