Sorry, this event has passed

The Store + Ivybridge Library are teaming up with the aim to provide a monthly Repair Café for Ivybridge

To enable this we need to find our team of Fixers and Doers!

That is what this precursor event is all about- meeting each other, finding out the skill sets we have to offer (and the ones we still need to find); learning more about Repair Cafés and what is involved in making them happen and having them run smoothly; and then building on this network by reaching out to more of our community to get involved.

We’ll be meeting at The Store, housed downstairs at Makers Mews.
Makers Mews is on Harford Road, opposite the ‘snail’ car park, in the white stone barn, behind the advertising billboard.
The Store is in its infancy, but will eventually become the community’s shared shed / loft / garage / utility room / spare room / cupboard-under-the-stairs etc; whereby you can borrow rather than buy, maintain and *store* tools and equipment used once or twice a year, if that. Saving you money, time, effort, and storage space.
There is a mad stat about drills being used for something like 13 minutes in their lifetime; knowing that, would you want to buy and own a drill and the necessary accessories, or would you rather borrow one?

Anyway, back to Repair Cafés…
Too many things get thrown away unnecessarily. By setting up a Repair Café in Ivybridge, we can actively contribute to a more sustainable society.
We can help create a society where everyone can find a place, where repair expertise is cherished and passed on, and where valuable raw materials are used in a responsible way.
Very few people even think about the possibility of repairing old products. Most people no longer know how to repair things. This type of knowledge is noticeably on the decline. People still in possession of this practical know-how (such as craftspeople, older generations, and so-called ‘non-skilled’ workers) are often not adequately appreciated by society. Yet it is these people who could greatly contribute towards making our society more sustainable.

The Repair Café Foundation (repaircafe.org), who are actively supporting Ivybridge’s set-up efforts, has the following goals:
a) to bring back repairing into local society in a modern way;
b) to maintain repair expertise and to spread this knowledge;
c) to promote social cohesion in the local community by connecting neighbours from very different backgrounds and with different motives, with each other, through an inspiring and low-key event.

Sounds good, right? It’s totally achievable too- with your help.
Join us, Oct 22nd, to start the work.
