Built in 1864, the Daymark is a grade II listed tower, which reaches 80ft high and visible from Dartmouth. It can be seen for many miles if you’re out at sea. This stunning octagonal tower is situated in a picturesque field overlooking the sea, and can be accessed by foot along the South West Coast Path from Froward Point. It can also be reached via car by parking at Brownstone Car Park and then just a short walk through the farmlands towards the sea.
The Daymark was initially built as a navigational landmark for travellers at sea to find their way to Dartmouth Harbour as the entrance was considered difficult to locate. When Charles Seale Hayne, the owner of Brownstone at the time, became a founding member of the Dartmouth Harbour Commission in 1863, his role was to improve the town’s facilities and access to it – hence the erection of the tower just a year later.
The walk from Brownstone National Trust Car Park is a smooth stroll with incredible views across the Dart Estuary and Start Bay. Further down, past the Daymark you will find Brownstone Battery which was built in 1942 and used as a defence against the German Navy.
Along the walk from Froward to the Daymark and onwards to the Battery you can find a huge array of flora and fauna. Much of the area is owned by the National Trust, who work with the farmers to cultivate the land and create a home for many rare birds and plants. Further down, The Mew Stone will be visible from the Battery, where a large seabird colony resides, and it’s a great place to spot grey seals!
It’s clear to see why this spectacular limestone tower is a favourite amongst runners, walkers and photographers alike, with peaceful, countryside and coastal surroundings. Because the path down towards the Daymark isn’t too strenuous, it’s a great walk for young ones with little feet or families with older relatives. It also makes for an excellent dog walk!
