South Devon National Landscape (formerly AONB) is part of a family of protected landscapes across Britain, which also includes Dartmoor National Park. There are 46 National Landscapes in the UK. These areas are protected to keep them special now and for the future. They are wonderful for wildlife and scenery but also places where people live, work, relax and take care of the countryside.
The South Devon National Landscape was designated by government in 1960. It covers 60 glorious miles of coastline, estuaries and countryside between Plymouth and Torbay. When visiting the South Devon region, a trip to the South Devon National Landscape is a must, take some time to absorb the beauty and diversity that this part of the county has to offer. Whether you wish to enjoy a long cycle ride and bird watching along one of the river banks, take a short walk with the kids along the rugged and dramatic coastline or just savour the views of the Devonshire countryside as you amble through the lanes to one of the many quaint village pubs, this part of the region has plenty on offer for those of all ages to enjoy.
There are over 40 stunning walks across South Devon National Landscape ranging in length from 2 to 12 miles. Their website has an Interactive Map which can be found by scrolling down the homepage.
The South Devon National Landscape also runs events throughout the year featuring walks, talks and workshops aimed to educate people about the area and improve their enjoyment of the landscape. Finding an event that is running during your stay is a great way to learn about this sensational area whilst experiencing it.
