Bolberry Down is the starting point for discovering spectacular coastal walks between Salcombe and Hope Cove. A level and surfaced circular trail through the downs offers easy access to sea views and wildflowers carpeting the cliffs.
Part of the stunning coastline at Bolberry Down is accessible to all; this relatively flat section of the coast path provides the perfect place for a smooth level trail, with plenty of benches to sit and enjoy the view.
The route takes you from the Bolberry car park, which includes disabled parking bays, to the end of Bolberry Down. From here you can discover the beautiful views of Hope Cove, and on a clear day you can see as far as Lizard Point.
For something more challenging, you can follow the coast path east towards Salcombe, past East Soar and Overbeck's. Discover the remote sandy beach at Soar Mill Cove less than a mile from the car park, or head west to Bolt Tail and you'll cross the ramparts of an Iron Age fort.
The Iron Age fort at Bolt Tail, some 2,500 years old, is of a type more commonly found in Cornwall. Defended by a rampart 270m (886ft) long and 4.6m (15ft) high, it commanded a strategic position overlooking Bigbury Bay, with a natural harbour at Hope Cove. It might have been a tribal centre, a trading place, or a meeting spot.
Bolt Head to Bolt Tail is one of the areas included in the South Devon Coastal Heritage Project which aims to improve the status of the 55 scheduled monuments around the coast of the South Devon National Park some of which are on the ‘At Risk’ register. By doing this, it hopes to ensure they are protected for future generations to learn, enjoy and ultimately remove them from the register.
