Nestled within gorgeous South Devon countryside between Totnes and the small village of Marldon, you’ll find Berry Pomeroy. It lies within the South Hams district of the region and also within the South Devon National Landscape. It is most notably known for it’s eerie castle which you can find out more about below.
Believed to be one of the most haunted places in England, Berry Pomeroy Castle was started in the late 15th century as the home of the de Pomeroy family. The land was sold to the Seymour family in the mid 16th century with the intent to create the most spectacular home in Devon but work was never completed and by 1700 it had been abandoned. Nowadays the site it managed by English Heritage and all that remains is the shell. Over the years, tales of ghosts and ghouls have enveloped the Grade I listed building and it even featured on the television show ‘Most Haunted: Live’. As the main attraction for the village it’s certainly worth a visit when you’re in the area… if you dare!
Found in the village centre, Berry Pomeroy Church (St. Mary’s Church) was rebuilt on the site of an earlier church. The stained-glass window dates back to the 15th century and the medieval rood screen is 42 feet long. The church was constructed by Sir Richard de Pomeroy whose tomb is in the corner of the chancel.
As mentioned previously, Berry Pomeroy is just a short distance from the quirky, riverside town of Totnes. Here you’ll find plenty of independent shops to explore and lots of lovely bistros and cafés. A short car journey away is also the bustling resorts of the English Riviera with plenty of attractions and beaches for the family to enjoy.
