Description

West Devon Way - Stage 6 - Yelverton to Bickleigh - 4.5 miles This is a varied stage which includes woodland tracks, and stretches of old railway line that include the atmospheric 300m Shaugh Tunnel (for which a torch is recommended), and some fine views from the Ham Green Viaduct. The stage includes some road, gravel, grass and woodland tracks stretches, before following the well surfaced off road NCN 27 cycle route along the former railway bed. This stage is generally level, with a couple of short steeper sections. There are some stiles and narrow kissing gates.

Walk Waypoints

  1. 1
Starting near the church by the roundabout in Yelverton, follow the tarmac road which runs on the left of and parallel to the A386 heading south. Continue alongside Drake's Leat, crossing a bridge and then following the cycleway.
  2. 2
Turn left over a bridge and then immediately right on the track alongside the leat. After 200m take the public footpath to Hoo Meavy on your left, follow over a bridge and descend to pass through a gate. Follow the track downhill and at the next T junction turn right.
  3. 3
Follow the track as it turns left under the railway and turn immediately right through a kissing gate. Follow the path which passes thriough another kissing gate, and continue through a gate to the right of a house. Follow this wider track to reach the road below Clearbrook.
  4. 4
Turn left along the road and then immediately before the road bridge turn right over a stile onto a riverside public footpath through fields, woodland and gates to another road at Goodameavy.
  5. 5
At the road turn right, go under the railway bridge, then turn left and shortly afterwards left again onto the railway path and cycleway. Turn right to follow the cycleway south.
  6. 6
Follow the cycleway through the 300m Shaugh Tunnel. An atmospheric experience, a torch is recommended! Pass the old station at Shaugh Halt and cross over the Ham Green Viaduct.
  7. 7
If you are not continuing with stage 7 of the West Devon Way, you can finish your walk and catch a bus at Bickleigh, by taking a sharp left which doubles back just after passing under a road bridge. Follow the path to the road and turn left crossing the bridge. Continue on the road to Bickleigh village where you will be able to catch a bus.
