Description

This trail explores the edge of Fernworthy Reservoir and enjoys views over Thornworthy Tor. Just 0.75 miles distant and mainly flat, the route is ideal for families with young children and babies in pushchairs. As well as a good walk, this route takes in Bronze Age hut circles dating back 4,000 years.

Walk Waypoints

  1. 1
Park in main car park (pay and display) and leave through the picnic site.
  2. 2 Stop a while and look out over the reservoir to Thornworthy Tor. Then follow the path alongside the reservoir to the dam. Look out for great crested grebe and swallows dive-bombing hatching insects.
  3. 3
Walk past the dam, rhododendron and berberis before turning sharp right.
  4. 4 Pass the old quarry from where stone was taken to construct the dam. Then pass the bronze age hut circles which date back 4,000 years. Imagine what it would have been like to live up here in these granite circles.
  5. 5
Return to car park, where there are public toilets and picnic tables for a relaxed and well earned lunch.
