Description

Monkokehampton Cycle Route - 20 miles This route heads north from Okehampton, undulating with some steep hills. It is suitable for all abilities if taken at your own pace. It uses quiet lanes and roads. The NCN27 route is signed and can be followed out of Okehampton. This route returns along the NCN27 all the way from Deckport Cross. The route is entirely on OS Map Landranger 191.

Cycle Waypoints

  1. 1 Start on Fore Street in Okehampton. Heading east along Fore Street, turn left down North Street following the NCN27. This is a cycle track contra-flow to the one-way traffic. Follow North Street out of Okehampton (it becomes North Road) and continue on this road (B3217).
  2. 2 After about 3 miles you reach a right hand fork (Dornaford Cross), signed 'Sampford Courtenay'. Take this lane, and follow through to Sampford Chapple Cross and the A3072. Sampford Courtenay is said to be one of the prettiest villages in West Devon and possesses an interesting heritage and history. Indeed, the local Prayer Book Rebellion took place here in 1549 - there is a display chronicling the event at the back of St Andrews Church.
  3. 3 Cross over the main road and take the next left turn, signed 'Honeychurch'.
  4. 4 Follow on and turn left at Redpost cross, signed 'Honeychurch'
  5. 5 Follow on to Rowtry Cross, turn left signed 'Honeychurch' and follow immediately through Honeychurch. This remote and quiet hamlet is home to St Marys, a small and delightful Norman church.
  6. 6 Continue until you reach the T-junction, Venn Copse Cross, turn left, signed 'Corstone'. Follow the lane through Bude Moor Cross, heading towards Corstone.
  7. 7 At Corstone Cross continue on the lane towards Monkokehampton, shortly after bear round to the left at Woodcroft Cross.
  8. 8 Follow this lane through to Monkokehampton, where you turn left onto the B3217, then immediate right, signed 'Hatherleigh' (Monkokehampton Cross).
  9. 9 Climb out of Monkokehampton and up towards Hatherleigh. Go through 'Wellafor Cross' and eventually you reach 'Deckport Cross'. This is high on Hatherleigh Moor, and you may wish to stop here for a break and to admire the view, before turning left down the hill. It is at this point you re-join the NCN27, in the direction of Okehampton. From now on you remain on the NCN27 until Okehampton.
  10. 10 Instead of turning left here you can continue on to Hatherleigh (1 mile) for refreshments if you wish and return to this point, otherwise turn left, signed to Upcott. There are also the NCN27 signs from now until Okehampton.
  11. 11 Follow the lane for about 2.5 miles then take the right turn at Terris Cross, signed 'Cadham'.
  12. 12 Follow the NCN27 signs, left onto the B3216, then turn right onto the A3072, and an immediate left on the NCN27 signed route.
  13. 13 Continue on this lane and follow the NCN27 signs through to Okehampton (4.5 miles).
