Description

Meldon Viaduct and Dartmoor Railway - accessible from Stage 4 Eastbound This alternative route or detour from Stage 1 of the West Devon Way crosses the spectacular Meldon Viaduct, and passes closeby to Meldon Station on the scenic Dartmoor Railway on which trains travel between Meldon and Okehampton (and to Exeter on summer Sundays). A range of paths can be accessed from the Meldon Viaduct leading towards Meldon Reservoir, and up onto the high moors. Meldon Viaduct now forms part of the off road Granite Way cycle route, which in turn is part of the National Cycle Network 27 between the north and south coasts of Devon.

Walk Waypoints

  1. 1
On stage 4 eastbound of the Two Castles Trail, take a path to your left just before reaching the old railway bridge above the road into Meldon. Turn right as the path joins the Granite Way heading east. Follow the path for around 300m and then cross Meldon Viaduct.
  2. 2
After crossing the Viaduct, take a path immediately on your right. Follow this path as it turns under the Viaduct. Follow the path through woods and straight ahead at any junctions. as it joins a bridleway.
  3. 3
The bridleway emerges opposite a parking area. You rejoin the main Two Castles Trail here, by turning right and crossing the A30 road bridge.
