Description

Hatherleigh and Folly Gate Cycle Route - 20 miles This is a striaghtforward route, undulating with a few very steep hills and using quiet lanes and roads. It is suitable for all abilities providing that you take your time. The National Cycle Network 27 route is signed and can be followed out of Okehampton. The route follows the NCN27 all the way to Hatherleigh, then branches off looping back through Folly Gate to re-join the NCN27 at Goldburn Cross. The route is described counter-clockwise but is equally good in either direction. The route is entirely on OS Map Landranger 191.

Cycle Waypoints

  1. 1 From Fore Street in Okehampton, turn left, following the NCN27 down North Street. This is a cycle track contra-flow to the one-way traffic. Follow North Street out of Okehampton (it becomes North Road) and continue on this road (B3217).
  2. 2 When you reach the town limits, take a left hand turn (signed as the NCN27) and follow this lane, keeping Abbeyford Woods on your right hand side. At the end of the lane turn right.
  3. 3 Continue up this lane for about 2 miles until your reach Goldburn Cross, go straight across signed 'Jacobstowe'.
  4. 4 Follow this lane for about 2 miles to Jacobstowe. Following the NCN27 signs, carefully cross the A3072, (then left onto the B3216) then after a short distance turn right down the lane signed 'Cadham'. Jacobstowe itself is an interesting little village, including a church of medieval origin and a mill near the River Ockment.
  5. 5 Higher Cadham Farm on your right, and continue on to the T-junction at Terris Cross. Turn left, signed Upcott, following the NCN27.
  6. 6 Follow this lane up towards Hatherleigh, after about 2 miles you reach 'Deckport Cross'. Turn left signed 'Hatherleigh'. This is high on Hatherleigh Moor, and you may wish to stop here for a break and to admire the view across to Dartmoor.
  7. 7 Follow the road down into Hatherleigh. Hatherleigh is a delightful example of a Devonshire market town. The town is certainly worthy of further exploration off the saddle, with shops, pubs and refreshments.
  8. 8 Departing from Hatherleigh we leave the NCN27 - follow the road down through Hatherleigh, to the roundabout. Cross over the roundabout (take care here, main road traffic), onto the A3072, signed 'Holsworthy'.
  9. 9 Take the next left hand lane, signed 'Northlew'.
  10. 10 Continue on this lane for about 2 miles through to Gribbleford Bridge. Cross the bridge then take the lane on the left, signed 'Westacott and Inwardleigh'.
  11. 11 After about a mile you reach Westacott Cross, take the left turn.
  12. 12 Bear right at Norleigh Cross, following the lane through to Inwardleigh. At Inwardleigh follow the lane through the village towards Folly Gate.
  13. 13 At Folly Gate turn left at the T-junction then cross the A386 (fast traffic) signed 'Goldburn'.
  14. 14 Descend, then climb to Goldburn Cross. It is here that we re-join the NCN27, turning right following the sign for Hook towards Okehampton. There are a number of footpath trails and a picnic area in Abbeyford Woods which are worth a detour.
  15. 15 Follow this lane through to to the junction with the B3217, then follow the NCN27 signs to finish in Okehampton.
