CycleDescription
Drogo and Chagford Extension - 10 miles This loop route, extends the Throwleigh Cycle Route by another 10 miles, passing by Castle Drogo (a magnificent National Trust property) and the Stannary Town of Chagford. The route links to the Throwleigh Cycle Route at East Ash. It contains a number of steep hills, and cyclists should have a good standard of fitness if following this extension route.
Cycle Waypoints
- 1 At East Ash take the right hand fork, signed Whiddon Down, and follow on to the A382 T-junction.
- 2 Turn right onto the main road (be careful - fast traffic), then take the second turning on the left signed to Drewsteignton.
- 3 Follow through until the wide sweeping T-junction and take the right hand turn signed to Castle Drogo.
- 4 The entrance for Castle Drogo is on the left. This magnificent building was built in the early 20th Century and is now a National Trust property and is open to the public.
- 5 Continue on to Sandy Park, cross the A382, and continue towards Chagford.
- 6 At the end of the lane is a T-junction (B3206), turn right towards the centre of Chagford - an old Stannary Town.
- 7 From the central square (with shops, toilets and pubs) take the lane on the right towards Throwleigh.
- 8 The route towards Throwleigh is very hilly, but this route avoids the worst. Follow the Throwleigh signs out of Chagford and down to the ancient bridge over the River Teign. Cross the bridge, continue straight up towards Whiddon Down (making sure not to take the turning on the left just after the bridge).
- 9 After a hard climb out the Teign Valley, take the first left.
- 10 Go through the next crossroads.
- 11 Take the turning on the left signed towards Ash Hill. Continue along Ash Hill to return to the start of this extension, and the return leg of the Throwleigh Cycle Route to Okehampton.
