Description

Drake's Trail Walking Spur 1 - Yelverton to Clearbrook - 5 miles On leaving Yelverton, this route follows Drake's Leat which was built in 1591 and is among Sir Francis Drake's accomplishments. The route then follows a section of the popular West Devon Way walknig route, before following the Drake's Trail off road cycling route back from Clearbrook to Yelverton. This route is generally easy and mainly flat, with a couple of gradual climbs and descents. The surface is generally firm, with a short section along a woodland path, which also has some narrow sections.

Walk Waypoints

  1. 1
Start in the centre of Yelverton by the Drake's Trail Information Board (next to the bus stop). Cross the road towards the church and pass the public toilets. After walking through the church car park, keep right and join the cycle path signed NCN27 and Drake's Trail.
  2. 2 Follow the path through the trees, and on emerging from the trees, turn left, and then immediately right.
  3. 3
As the path splits, take the smaller path to the left, signed for the West Devon Way and crossing over Drake's Leat on its way downhill.
  4. 4 Follow the path round to the right - signed to Elfordtown Farm.
  5. 5
After walking under the railway bridge, turn right through the old iron kissing gate.
  6. 6
Follow the path through the woods and through a gate, continuing straight ahead as it becomes a wider track.
  7. 7 As the track meets the road, turn right and walk gradually uphill to the village of Clearbrook.
  8. 8 Pass a pub on your right which makes a well placed half way stopping point.
  9. 9
  10. 10 Continue uphill, and turn right after crossing a small bridge over Drake's Leat, onto the cycle path signed NCN27 and Drake's Trail.
  11. 11
Go through the gates onto the old walled tramway.
  12. 12 As a track joins from the left, retrace your steps back to Yelverton following the NCN27 and Drake's Trail signs.
