Across the Exe Estuary from Exmouth, Starcross is a small waterside village with plenty of railway interest. The remains of one of Brunel's atmospheric railway pumping stations is here, and the modern railway, following Brunel's route, sweeps along the estuary a few feet from the water. A trainspotter's paradise, especially if heritage trains are running (as they do on occasion). Handy for Powderham, Exe Estuary exploration, SWCP and Dartmoor. Ferry to Exmouth if required.
The village of Starcross is a popular centre for sailing and is also a good location for bird watching on the Exe Estuary. A local pub has interesting displays about Brunel and his atmospheric railway. The railway station now gives access to the services running from Exeter to the coastal towns and the nearby passenger ferry has an hourly service crossing the Exe Estuary to the seaside town of Exmouth.
