Challaborough Bay Beach is a sheltered horseshoe cove with a fine sandy beach and rugged cliffs in the South Devon National Landscape.
The beach is great for building sand castles and a low tide rock pools are exposed giving kids and adults alike the chance to get close to the marine life that lives around the shore.
The beach experiences swells, shore breaks and great surfing conditions, created by a combination of the beach’s shape and sand banks, making it popular with surfers and bodyboarders. Throughout the day beginners and pros can all be seen floating close by waiting for the perfect wave.
The beach is accessible from nearby Bigbury on Sea by walking along a hilly stretch of the South West Coast Path. There are also parking spaces available, at a charge, in the holiday park’s private car park located a short walk from the sand. The beach is accessed by a small number of concrete steps and handrail or via a ramp at the northern end of the beach.
Challaborough Bay Beach is flanked by Challaborough Bay Holiday Park, where throughout the holiday season refreshments and beach shop can be found. During the summer months the beach has RNLI lifeguards and operates a summer dog ban.
The surrounding countryside is stunning and offers a number of walking routes to explore the local area. To the south east of Challaborough Bay Beach is Bigbury Beach and Bantham Beach which are over looked by Burgh Island. The island is accessible at low tide by a strip of sand which is completely covered at high tide, creating the island in all its glory. The coastal walk along the South West Coast Path between Challaborough Bay and Burgh Island offers spectacular views of the coastline, the beaches and island.
